Today was the first day of testing for my group and I, and we made a lot of changes to improve our car. The first time that we let our car go down the ramp, it was a bit lopsided, because we had added an antenna that we had assumed would improve the steering of the car. No such luck. Instead its direction was off, and the extra weight of such an unnecessary attachment to our vehicle made it's speed decrease. So, we decided to get rid of anything that was going to add weight to the car. We took off the antenna, and in addition, took off any extra rods that didn't add to the stability of our car. We then proceeded to add more parts that would make our car stable, because we wanted our car to be able to handle falling off the ramp, or any other accident, like a real car would. We added gray k'nex pieces to the sides of our wheels, and to any other parts of our base that seemed to be moving while the car raced. We raced our car again, this time without the extra pieces and our car went much faster, and farther. We then decided to add an extra wheel, because we thought it would make the car faster, if there was an added tire moving with the rest of the car. Instead, it made the car a little wobbly and we decided that the best thing for our car was that it needed to be nice and simple. So, we took off an entire row of rods that we thought made our car a little too big. This helped to make our car go faster, but the car wasn't the same. It wasn't stable enough, and we could have just gotten lucky that the tires hit the ramp just right, and the car didn't break. So we put our car back to the same simple design, (without the antenna, or extra wheel). I definitely learned that sometimes the best way to make a fast and efficient thing, is to keep it simple, and also, to always have your mind open to new ideas. You never know how an idea can make an invention better!
